'Renewal' series

In this project, I’m exploring the theme of transition from the past to the present, thinking about the physical paths that people have trod, but also our emotional and spiritual journeys.

Aspects of our lives can become forgotten, neglected, or lose value, and yet they persist into our future. More than that, they can be renewed and made into something beautiful.

I’m visualising this through discarded vintage frames and the images they contain. I’m restoring the wooden frames and using the original framed image as collage within my own landscape pastel drawing, which depicts a much-trodden pathway from over the years. The collage fragments become refreshed and are given a new life. They retain their past significance, but are embraced into a new present, taking on a fresh story.

Inevitably, this reflects my own spiritual journey, of growing confidence that the creator God doesn’t just leave us to decay and can renew us – wherever we are at! I’m inspired by what the Jewish prophet, Jeremiah, once wrote: “For I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.
